PSLE Chinese Oral 2026: What Parents Need to Know
The 2026 PSLE Chinese examination does not introduce a major new oral format. Instead, it continues to assess whether pupils can read clearly, understand a video stimulus and communicate ideas naturally in Mandarin. For parents, the key is steady practice—not memorising a fixed script.
Strong oral skills also support everyday communication. A child who can organise an answer, explain a reason and respond to a follow-up question will be better prepared for classroom discussion as well as the PSLE 华文口试.
Official 2026 PSLE Chinese Oral Format
Under the SEAB 2026 PSLE Chinese Language syllabus, the standard Chinese oral examination is worth 50 marks and accounts for 25% of the subject grade.
The oral format includes:
• 10-minute preparation time: Pupils prepare for both oral tasks electronically.
• Reading Aloud(朗读篇章): Pupils read a Chinese passage with accurate pronunciation, suitable pace, fluency and expression.
• Video Conversation(录像会话): Pupils watch a short video and discuss the topic with the examiners, giving relevant views, reasons and personal examples.
This format has been in place since 2017, so 2026 should be presented as continuity rather than a new exam structure. The standard Chinese oral assessment uses a video stimulus for conversation.
Why Chinese Oral Skills Matter
The oral examination rewards more than vocabulary. Pupils need to listen carefully, speak clearly and develop an answer instead of stopping after one sentence. Children who practise short, meaningful conversations regularly are less likely to freeze when the examiner asks an open-ended question.
Three Easy Ways to Practise at Home
Ten focused minutes a day can be more useful than an occasional long practice session. Try these low-pressure activities in Mandarin.
1. 角色扮演朗读(Character Voice Reading)
Choose a short passage from your child’s Chinese reader or storybook. Take turns reading different roles and experiment with pace, pauses and emotion. Then reread any difficult words accurately instead of rushing through them.
2. 录像观察与会话(Video Observation and Conversation)
Watch a short, age-appropriate video about school, family, health, the community or the environment. Ask: “你看到了什么?” “你同意这种做法吗?” and “你有类似的经历吗?” Encourage a complete answer with a reason and an example.
3. 每周中文话题(Weekly Chinese Discussion)
Choose one family meal each week for an all-Chinese discussion. Start with familiar topics, such as helping a friend, preparing for an examination or using a mobile phone responsibly. Parents can model useful connectors such as “我认为”, “因为”, “例如” and “所以”.
A Simple Framework for Video Conversation
Teach your child to organise each response with four steps: Observation → Opinion → Reason → Example.
- Observation: State the relevant action or situation shown in the video.
- Opinion: Give a clear view: “我认为这种做法……”
- Reason: Explain why using “因为……” rather than repeating the observation.
- Example: Add a personal experience or a realistic example, then link it back to the question.
This framework is a guide, not a script. Examiners may ask follow-up questions, so pupils should listen and respond naturally.
Common PSLE Chinese Oral Mistakes
Watch for these common mistakes:
• Describing every detail in the video without answering the examiner’s question.
• Giving a one-sentence opinion with no reason or example.
• Using memorised phrases that do not fit the topic.
• Speaking too softly or too quickly, especially during reading aloud.
• Switching to English immediately instead of paraphrasing an unfamiliar word in Chinese.
When Should My Child Start Practising?
Primary 3 or 4 is a good time to build regular speaking habits, while upper-primary pupils can add timed reading and PSLE-style video conversations. Keep practice encouraging: correct one or two important points at a time, then let your child try again.

Final Thoughts for Parents
PSLE Chinese oral preparation does not require hours of drilling. Short, frequent conversations help children become clearer, calmer and more flexible speakers. Focus on accurate reading, relevant ideas and complete answers—then build confidence one conversation at a time.
